Description
Through this practical and process-led workshop the photographers will examine the intersection of image, sound and performance. They will also look at ways to think beyond the photographic image, learn how to listen, build upon oral histories, and play through performance.
Over four weeks participants will closely observe the work of artists from Black, Latin American, and Asian contexts who have been critically engaged with questions of visibility and representation. They will learn to explore images not simply as a representation of reality, but as a method of thinking. Through discussion, visual experimentation and assignments, students will explore how these mediums can function as tools for reflection and personal narrative form. The course is limited to 10 students.
Prerequisite
Advanced: You are comfortable with your camera, whether film or digital, and with recording tools. You have already produced or are working on a body of work which includes experiments with photography, video/performance or sound. You have a fundamental understanding of working with audio and video editing software. You may be seeking a clearer way of working across mediums in your respective projects.
Entry Requirement
This Course is open to applicants of all ages. Entry is competitive and based on reviewing the letter of intent during the application. The letter should clearly articulate their motivation for participation in the course.

Vasudhaa Narayanan
Faculty Bio
Vasudhaa Narayanan is a visual artist and educator whose practice engages with gender, domesticity, and the body through photography, text, sculpture, and performance. Her work critically examines the intersection of patriarchy, caste, and cultural conditioning, often using conceptual imagery to interrogate ideas of otherness, shame, and autonomy. Drawing from personal and collective narratives, she explores the ways in which women’s bodies become contested sites within social, historical, and domestic spaces.
Narayanan’s practice extends beyond visual art into curatorial, editorial, and pedagogical work, further reinforcing her commitment to research-based storytelling. She has served as Features Editor at The Irregular Times, contributing to four issues that spotlight underrepresented narratives from South Asia. In 2022, she co-curated the Mumbai Urban Art Festival at Sassoon Docks with St+art India Foundation, facilitating conversations around urban identities and cultural memory.
Vasudhaa Narayanan grew up in Lagos, Nigeria and currently lives and works in Kolkata, India. Her work has been exhibited locally and internationally at venues such as Photo London (London), Fulcrum (Mumbai), Tri Art & Culture (Kolkata), Lumenvisum (Hong Kong), Halden Bookworks (Norway), Southern Exposure (San Francisco, CA), Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts – Project Space (New York, NY), the Goethe-Institut (India), and Bass & Reiner (San Francisco, CA).
Class Preparation
During the first class, each student should bring one 250-word project statement. Please include the following:
